General Information on Credit Card Services

  • What is a credit card?
A credit card is a tool that consumers use to purchase products or avail of services without using cash. It’s relatively safe and can be used as an effective way to track your expenses. We use credit cards to meet a wide range of needs: we swipe them for everyday transactions (e.g. medicines, groceries, gasoline) and for other purchases that reflect our unique lifestyle.

    Quick Tips
Live within your means. This basic tip is your first step to financial freedom. Staying within your credit limit keeps overlimit fees at bay.
  • What can I do to obtain credit?
Many think it’s just a matter of filling out an application form. But there’s more to obtaining credit than that. To make sure that we continue to offer the best to our clients, credit card companies evaluate credit card applications seriously. Aside from the expected verification to screen fraudulent applications and misrepresentations, credit card companies check if card applicants have a history of poor payment and behavior with other financial institutions.

    Quick Tips
    1. Always pay all your credit card bills on time to maintain your good credit rating.
    2. Your chances of obtaining a credit card can improve if you have a long-standing relationship with any of the Metrobank branches nationwide.
  • How would I know the status of my credit card application?
Upon submission of your fully accomplished application form and requirements, your credit card application will be evaluated and processed within 2-3 weeks. • Credit Card Charges
  • What fees are charged by maintaining a credit card?
Yes. Metrobank cards are subject to Annual Membership Fees. The fees are billed to the account a month from the anniversary date of the credit card account.

e.g. Your card was approved on January 1, 2012 and your account’s statement cut-off is every 10th of the month. The following year, your annual membership fee will be billed on your February 10, 2013 statement cut-off.

Visit the Cards section of this website to know the corresponding annual fees per Metrobank Card product type.
  • Do credit cards have any hidden charges?
No. The terms and conditions that come with your credit card lists down the charges that may apply to your account. Most cardholders like you inquire about Finance Charges or Interest (the amount charged to your account when you decide not to pay the full amount reflected in your billing statement), Overlimit Fees (which are charged to your account when your transaction goes over your available credit limit) and Multiple Payment Fee (charged to your account when you settle your account balance in excess of two within the same calendar month).

    Quick Tips
    1. Always pay in full and on time.
    2. You can check your balance, cut off and due dates through Metrobank Card Corporation’s Text and Online services. These free paperless features save lots of trees!
    3. You can apply for M Lite Mastercard, the credit card that charges one of the lowest interest rates in the market today.
  • Can I pay in installment at no interest?
Yes. The solution you are looking for is 0% installment. With this option, you can bring home your purchase and pay for it in up to 12 months at no interest whatsoever.

    Quick Tips
You can relax when you see the 0% Installment logo at your favorite shop. Metrobank Card Corporation’s partners - over hundreds of merchant establishments around the country – offer this feature.
  • How are interest fees computed?
The finance charge (FC) at the prevailing interest rate is computed on an average daily balance method upon the following:

    1. Card Member’s previous balance as reflected in the current SOA excluding Cash Advance Fee from the start to the end of the statement cycle, plus
    2. cash advances posted during the current statement cycle, accruing from transaction date to the end of the statement cycle, plus
    3. the previous statement’s purchase, installment principal and interest amortization, fees and charges and other debits, accruing from the corresponding transaction dates to the end of the previous statement cycle, less
    4. payments and credits posted during the current statement cycle, accruing from their posting dates to the end of the current statement cycle except payments and credits applied to cash advance fee.

Any unpaid balance from your previous SOA will incur FC that will be reflected in your next SOA. Note that you need to pay your Total Amount Due on or before your Payment Due Date for two (2) consecutive SOA to avoid being charged with FC. Below is an illustration:

    1. The FC of PHP43.17 was charged in the Aug 2016 SOA because the payment of PHP500 was less than the July 2016 Total Amount Due worth PHP1,200. This FC is the sum of A, B, and C computed as follows: (A) New purchases from previous SOA (July 1, 2016) where FC was deferred (PHP1,200.00) x 42% / 360 days x 4 days [from transaction date (June 28, 2016) to the previous statement date (July 1, 2016)] = PHP5.60, plus (B) Ending balance from previous SOA (PHP1,200.00) x 42% / 360 days x 21 days [from start of the current SOA cycle (July 2, 2016) to payment date (July 22, 2016) = PHP29.40, plus (C) Remaining Unpaid Balance from July 1 SOA (PHP700.00) x 42% / 360 days x 10 days [from a day after the payment date (July 23, 2016) to the current SOA date (Aug 1, 2016)] = PHP8.17
    2. The FC of PHP63.71 was charged in the Sep 2016 SOA based on the remaining unpaid balance from the July 2016 SOA that was billed in the Aug 2016 SOA. This FC is the sum of D and E computed as follows: (D) New purchases from previous SOA (Aug 1, 2016) where FC was deferred (PHP1,500.00) x 42% / 360 days x 5 days [from transaction date (July 28, 2016) to the previous statement date (Aug 1, 2016)] = PHP8.75, plus (E) Ending balance from previous SOA (PHP2,243.17) x 42% / 360 days x 21 days [from start of the current SOA cycle (Aug 2, 2016) to payment date (Aug 22, 2016)] = PHP54.96
The above sample computation is based on the 3.5% interest rate. Computation of the finance charge may vary depending on applicable interest rate of a particular card type.

    Quick Tips
    1. Review your statement balance and report any discrepancies within 20 days.
    2. Make sure that you settle your statement balance up to the last centavo.
    3. Take note of your due dates and take advantage of the online and electronic statement of accounts to know your payables.
    4. Be mindful on the posting of your payment – check payments are posted longer than cash payments.
    5. Cash advance transactions would automatically assess finance charge upon transaction.
